The 2 Greatest Commanments ...

First lets take a quick look at the Ten Commandments, bearing in mind that the Bible is a compilation of 1,000's of comandments.

1. "You shall have no other gods besides Me."

2. "You shall not make for yourself an idol."

3. "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”

4. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

5. "Honor your father and your mother.”

6. "You shall not murder.”

7. "You shall not commit adultery."

8. "You shall not steal."

9. "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

10. "You shall not covet.”

Besides the ten Jesus gave a new commandment and tells us that the greatest is:

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.

And second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Mathew ch22 v37:40

Now what does this tell us as a Christian?

It tell's us that Love is very important.

Love God

Love Yourself

Love Your neighbor.

This is "Key" in Christianity, that's why Jesus said these are the "GREATEST"...not just worth considering, but the GREATEST.

To love everyone as God loves You is a tall order. However, if you can do this you will have peace and grace in abundance. It's tough, but the rewards are great if you can succeed. We cover more on love in our section "To understand God's love for us and how we can love others in His name"

So what does this tell us if we are slanderous or ill tempered towards a fellow man?...it tells us we are not pleasing God, and no excuses. You see God is the ONLY judge. We should focus on our own weaknesses and sin and let God look after those that may try to harm us. Pray for your enemies.

Food for thought: If everybody honoured the 2 greatest commandments, what sort of world would we live in today? My guess would be, "very different".

So lets think about this a moment. "If you kept these 2 commandments do you think that you would break the others?...I don't think so.

If you love God, would you break commandments 1 - 4?

If you love you neighbor as your self, would you break commnadments 5 - 10?

You see the words of Jesus in Mathew ch22 v37:40, Jesus simplifies the age old set of rules, the Ten Commandments and He makes it easy for us. These words are "key" in Christian beliefs and must be adheired to. That's why it is important to have fellowship. With fellowship you will see the glory within your fellow Christians and will receive spiritual food by the grace of God, through your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Fellowship will save you from spiritual starvation and darkness, bring your *love to the surface.

1 Corinthians ch13 v4:10

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

*Charity means "love thy fellowman" in latin.
